PETER & PENNY

Katryn Richardson & Ed Wrobel adopted Peter & Penny. Katryn writes::
Ed and I adopted Peter and Penny after my beloved kitty of 15 years went on to the great catnip field in the sky. Imagine our surprise to find out from them that "Peter" and "Penny" were fictitious names that they had adopted while under protective custody. "Peter" told us that his real name is [Chief] Calling Tiger AKA "MothSlayer" AKA "the Buff Bandit" AKA "Great Orange One" and then said "...some people call me Maur-rrrice". "Penny's" real name is Princess ThunderCloud (P.T. for short) AKA "Grey Girl" AKA "Miss Swish".
After a brief tummyache when Calling Tiger ate too many moths, they both have settled in famously, although they keep telling us that we can't expect them to protect us from all those birds outside if we keep the doors and windows shut. We haven't had the heart to tell them that the birds have been paying us off.
(Seriously, they are the light of our lives and we have been so lucky and glad to have them. Thanks to all of you!)

DINO & MIA

We got this touching email from Sabrina Ousmaal:
Dino and Mia came into our lives, in January 2005 shortly Mitchie after our Calico of 14 years passed away. Mitchie had been with us since my husband and I got married and we often referred to her as our first-born. True to her Calico nature, she was temperamental with most and the sweetest with us. When, after a few months of chemotherapy, she lost her battle with cancer, we thought we would never be able to adopt again and love another pet as we had loved our Mitchie. But through Petfinder we met Dino, a polydactyl loverboy. One discovery let to another and with the help and coordination of three rescue groups, one of which was SPCA NOVA, we adopted our two cats Dino and Mia. Over the past year with these two adorably spirited cats, I learnt to rely on them for comfort and cuddles as I too, by some irony of the sort, became a cancer patient and now survivor. Dino and Mia kept my spirits up and often distracted me from the horrors of treatment. I cannot imagine this past year without them. I wish I could do more to show my appreciation to those who rescued these two little ones as they have added so much to our appreciation of lifes simple pleasures. So, my hat off to all those rescue groups who, like SPCANOVA, allow us to introduce pleasure, love and joy to our lives.

ZACH

Christy Chason & Eric Maples adopted Zach in May 2003. Christy writes:
Before adopting Zach, we were told he was the "sweetest and friendliest cat in the world," and he has definitely lived up to that description! Zach (aka Boogie Pooh Bear) is a big green-eyed boy with a loud purr and a huge heart. With oversized paws and a large physique, he could be mistaken for a bobcat! It has simply been a joy having this loving kitty in our home for almost three years. We cannot imagine life without him. He loves to be close to our side, and will squeeze in between us on the couch when we watch television. Zach loves attention, and has become quite spoiled over the years! He is definitely the king of the apartment--every piece of furniture is basically his. He wakes us up every morning by standing at the foot of the bed and meowing loudly, and will occasionally nip at my legs to get me out of bed to feed him! He loves to bird watch, then fall asleep in a patch of sunlight on the window sill. He has a small green pillow that is his "woobie"--he bites it, chews on it, plays with it, claws at it, licks it, rolls around on it, and sleeps with it. We are so happy that Zach is part of our family!

CHARLIE BROWN & PUMPKIN/CHESTER

Mollie Eversburg and Mike Williams adopted Charlie Brown and Pumpkin now named Chester in August 2004. Charlie Brown and Chester were and still are the best of friends, brothers really. No matter how big they get, they find a way to fit in their kitten sized bed together! Thank you for giving us the wonderful opportunity to love and adore these two.

MOE & NATE

Abby Mansfield adopted Moe and Nate in June 2005 after being a foster caretaker for both of them. This is what she wrote to us about them:
I had been a foster for Moe the longest - since he came into the SPCA's care. He was the only cat in the house for quite a while, and I could tell he was restless and needed a kitty companion. I brought in Nate when he a small kitten, and the boys bonded almost instantly. Moe is kind of shy, and Nate is fearless, so they complement each other perfectly. It is very clear that Moe is much happier with Nate around. I knew I couldn't part with these cuties, so I adopted them and brought them with me in my move to medical school. They are so adorable, and provide constant entertainment for each other and for me. They chase and wrestle, play "hide and seek" and groom each other. I'm so glad to have these now "best buddies" in my life.

BINGO/JD

Libby Holman adopted Bingo now named Jefferson Davis ("JD") in January 2005. JD has easily transitioned from a street cat to a gentleman of leisure. He refuses all but bottled water. JD is very active and attacks anything that moves, including his owner's underwear as she tries to get dressed in the morning. He is very sweet and loving. He likes to prop himself up on pillows and sit like a human. He enjoys surfing the internet and attacking the moving items on the screen. He also enjoys sleeping in the bathtub, watching birds and squirrels through the window and sitting in the kitchen sink on the rare occasions his owner cooks. He has also mastered turning on the alarm clock when he decides its time to get up for breakfast.

Precious

Christine Townsend adopted Precious (the grey kitty on the right) in September 2000. She will be 8 years old this year. This photo of Precious along with her two brothers (also rescue kitties) was entered in our Friends For Life Calendar competition for 2006. In the photo, they are keeping careful watch on some squirrels. Christine wrote:
The neighbors made a Halloween display out of corn stalks and many of the stalks still had corn in them.  They drew all the squirrels in the neighborhood.  My kitties nearly lost their minds!!!!  There were 3-4 squirrels at a time and they seemed to know that the kitties couldn't get them.  Three cats sat there like they were watching a tennis match.

Chloe

Louise Ravert adopted Chloe in August 2003. This is what she wrote to us:
When we got Chloe, I think that she only weighed @6-7 lbs. Chloe had her annual checkup last month. and she now weighs a whopping 11 lbs. The vet said that she is just a little overweight and her checkup went well. She has some issues, but we are working through them with her. Also, Chloe is very vocal about everything! Thank you for Chloe! We love her!

Marley and Poe/BoSox

Nicole Cleaveland adopted Marley and Poe (now called BoSox) from SPCA separately over the past couple of years. We're glad to hear they've bonded and are happy. Here's what she had to say about their new life with her.
"I thought I would give you an update on our wonderful kitties. Marley and BoSox are best buddies - they absolutely love each other. Both are very curious about the birds outside and are just waiting for one to come close to the window. They love to wrestle and sleep together all day. I don't know what one would do without the other. We are so happy with our SPCA kitties. I attached a picture of the two of them. Looks like we need to get another bed!"

Sarah/Bootsie and Gloucester/Dusty

Paula Nowakowski and Michael Smith have adopted two cats from SPCA. Here's what they have to say about the new additions to their family:
We adopted Sarah (Bootsie) in January 2004 weeks after our beloved long-haired calico Sammi died of cancer at age 18. Nick, who was then 17, needed another companion (and we did too). At age 6, Sarah was rescued by the SPCA from a home with dozens of cats and dogs, and while a bit skinny, was in pretty good health. Being an adult, she was perfect for Nick, and once she settled in she became a great "little sister" for Nick. They were only together less than a year, until old age caught up with Nick, and he died last October. We knew that we had room for another SPCA kitty, and set out looking for a sweet companion for Sarah.
We adopted Gloucester (Dusty) in December 2004. He’d been abandoned as a kitten on the side of the road with 3 siblings. When we went to visit him with his foster parents, we picked him up, and he purred and cuddled in our arms. We were hooked! And after a few months of crazy kitten-hood (climbing up the Christmas tree, launching himself from our office filing cabinet, climbing into the shower, and general lunacy) he’s settling down a bit, growing into a horse, and he & Sarah are great friends. She is clearly the boss of the house, though!
Gloucester’s our lap cat, always looking for love & affection. Sarah loves to play with her furry mice, and she’ll always come over looking for a chin scratch. We were broken hearted after losing Sammi and Nick, but Sarah & Gloucester are wonderful companions and we couldn’t imagine being without them.

Smokey/Arwen

Kathleen Sugrue and Donald Stark adopted Arwen (formerly Smokey) from SPCA in Fall 2004. Here's what they have to say about their little Polydactyl kitty: Well Miss Arwen is growing by leaps and bounds. We have had to put all treats and food into containers that lock as she has been tearing open the bags they come in. Today, she did one better. Yes.....Miss Arwen is quite pleased with herself. She managed, with those extra digits, to get the lid off the container and help herself to a "second breakfast". She's been trying for weeks.
Arwen and my other female, Widget (pictured together), have become quite inseparable. They clean each other, play together continually, and chase each other up and down all 3 floors to the townhouse.
Arwen has also become quite fond of getting in front of computer monitors and tv's. She especially loves it when we put the cat sitter video on the 42" Plasma tv. She also loves bird watching from the bay window. She has also learned from Widget, to be very vocal. Gone are the days of her being the quiet one. Thank You again for letting us adopt Arwen(Smokey), she has been a delight. She IS the little princess, and she knows it! She is definitely a part of the family.

Julius

Vicki Phillips adopted Julius in September 2004. Here's an update that she sent us on him:
We adopted Julius to keep our existing cat (Lewis) company. When they were first introduced, Julius took to Lewis right away and wanted to play, even though there was a significant size difference between the two cats (Lewis was 12 lbs and Julius was only 6 lbs). Lewis wasn’t so sure and didn’t know what to think of a new cat - but Julius was very patient in getting Lewis to play with him. After a couple of days, they were rolling around like brothers. Julius is definitely the affectionate one with the loudest purr! He seems to purr constantly, and is always looking for a warm lap or a quick rubdown. He loves to lay on this back for a belly rub. He is also insatiable with food. Julius will eat anything you accidentally leave behind, including peanuts, asparagus, and even brownies! He is known to claw his way through a ziplock bag to get to the food inside. Can you tell that he used to be an alley cat? He’s been a big influence on Lewis, who has become more affectionate and suddenly developed a taste for people food. Now, Julius is a full-size cat and probably looks a lot bigger since we picked him up from his foster parents. We’re so happy we decided to adopt Julius and can’t imagine our lives without him.

Beau/Jack and Daisy

Kate and Seth adopted Beau/Jack and Daisy from SPCA in 2004. Here's what they have to say about their kitties now:
When we went to pick up Jack and Daisy at their foster home, all three kittens (they had a sister Maggie), came running up to us, and were climbing into our laps immediately. Nothing has changed. These two are the friendliest pair, greeting everyone (even strangers) at the door. Daisy will rub on your legs until you pet her, and Jack will meow until you pick him up so that he can give you kisses and smell your face to see where you’ve been!
Daisy’s our lap-cat, in constant need of attention and a nice, warm lap. She doesn’t mind if you’re only sitting down for a minute to put on your shoes. After all, a lap is a lap! Jack is more mischievous and curious, but he’s still the sweet one that loves to be carried around. Everyone who meets him (non-cat lovers included) falls in love with him immediately. Maybe it’s the hugs and kisses…the boy’s a charmer!
These two lovebugs are virtually inseparable, spending all day running back and forth between windows, watching and talking to the birds. When they’re not bird-watching, they’re either curled up together napping, giving each other a bath, or chasing each other around the apartment.

LOLA

Lisa Dean and Callan Bentley adopted Lola in February 2005 and wrote this about her:
When we adopted Lola each of us took a Friday and a Monday off of work in order to help her acclimate to our apartment over a long weekend.   Lola's settled in quite well, reigning as the Queen of Apartment # 604. Her routine is to wake up early in an energetic and talkative mood, encouraging her people to play with her. Her favorite games are chase related -- practicing her predatory moves. It has been pointed out that since our apartment overlooks the Zoo, perhaps Lola is inspired by the lions' roars which occasionally drift in our windows. She likes chasing the leopard-print 'snake', the paper 'moth' on a string, and a furry sort of 'spider' toy. In addition, she amuses herself with a suite of household objects, indicating her extraordinary levels of creativity: Q-tips, paper bags, and cardboard toilet paper tubes and boxes. She has also taken to playing with bottle caps, but they are only fun if she puts them in a shoe first, and then reaches inside to bat them around. As a consequence, we have to empty out our footwear before we put it on -- to shake out any little Lola-emplaced surprises inside.   Finally, she is incredibly affectionate and loves to nap on or right next to us, purring quietly.  We love our new roommate.

ELVIS/FOZZIE

In November 2004, Carlea Bauman of Arlington adopted Elvis (now called Fozzie) after the death of one of her two cats. Her other cat, Mr. Splash who is 15 years old was lonely but she wasn't sure how he'd do with a new kitty in the household.
When she found SPCA through Petfinder.com, it only took a few minutes for SPCA to suggest the "best fit" with Carlea's home.  Its not always easy finding a buddy for a 15 year old cat!  But SPCA immediately thought of a new, older kitty that had recently been rescued off the streets by a family who had adopted two SPCA cats a couple of years ago.  Fozzie was estimated by SPCA's vet to be between 10 to 12 years old.  He was described as sweet, friendly and loving and liked other cats!  We hooked Carlea up with Fozzie's rescuers/foster parents who had been caring for him for about a month (and were completely in love with him themselves!). With bittersweet feelings, Fozzie's foster family knew Carlea and Splash could provide him with a wonderful home.
It took a little while for Fozzie to become accustomed to his new surroundings and to Splash's desire to clean him incessantly. Carlea is crazy in love with Fozzie (and Splash!) and tells us that her favorite time with her boys is when she's got one curled up on her left side and the other curled up on her right side and they are both purring away....

Leonardo/Otis and Angelina/Zoe

Pauline Sinnett wrote to us:
On October 10, 2004, I adopted two cats from the SPCA -- Otis (formerly Leonardo) and Zoe (formerly Angelina).  The kittens along with three other siblings were born to a feral cat on August 7, 2004.  Otis and Zoe are now almost seven months old and are a delight.  Otis is very affectionate and demands attention whereas Zoe is more reticent; however, when you are not paying too much attention to her, she will snuggle up next to you and she enjoys being petted.  She just does not like to be picked up.  The pair get along great.  They are constantly playing together, sleeping together, and grooming each other.  Otis is quite a jumper.  He leaps from my bedroom window sill onto my bed which is a distance of almost six feet.  When he does this, he appears to be flying!  When I witness this, I usually say aloud, "Why, it's the amazing Otis who flies through the air."  They both enjoy assisting me in scooping out their litter box.  As I uncover waste to be removed, they both try to cover it back up. This has become a bedtime ritual.  I give a lot of Lori Burkhart, who fostered these kittens, for doing such a great job socializing them.  They were completely at home here the minute they stepped out of their cat carrier.  I was also pleased to learn that Otis and Zoe's mother had been captured, spayed, and was being placed in the country. Sometimes I think Otis may have inherited some wildness from his mother.  He is a very vocal cat and sometimes he just prowls around the condo vocalizing inconsolably as though he is looking for something.  We just pick him up and cuddle him and he is fine again.

Ginger Marmalade and Tippy Toes

Marsha Miller fostered and then adopted Tippy from SPCA.  Here's what she had to say about the new member of her family:
In June of 2004, Kathleen with SPCA asked if I could foster a one year old cat named "Tippy." She came from a home with too many cats, was very thin, and needed to put on weight. Tippy is a petite brown tabby girl. Kathleen knew that I wanted to adopt another cat to keep Ginger company, but I was leery because Ginger and I had such a purrfect relationship. I adopted Ginger in 2002 while living in Memphis. Ginger is a beautiful, loving, low-key and sweet Calico who is now 4 years old.
After about a month of getting Tippy and Ginger acclimated to one another, Ginger and I agree that Tippy has added so much to our lives! She runs, jumps when trying to catch toys in mid air, gives kitty kisses, sleeps with me and has a real cute squeak noise when she plays. Tippy has definitely increased the exercise level for Ginger. In addition, she is fearless and because she is so curious she is always ready to explore everywhere, including jumping into the cabinet where I store my sweaters. She loves the feel of the sweaters.
Ginger and Tippy now play together, chase each other, eat together and sleep together. If one of them leaves the room, the other patrols the apartment until they are reunited. In addition, they love groom each other...a sure sign they have bonded with one another!

NISKIYA/NIKKI

Alyssa Dragnich adopted Niskaya (now called Nikki) in October 2004. This is what Alyssa wrote to us about Nikki:
Here she is, curled up with her new "big sister" Bella, whom I adopted as a stray a year ago. I adopted Nikki after my other cat died unexpectedly, and while I didn't plan to get another cat right away, Bella seemed lonely. The wonderful SPCA volunteers helped me to pick out Nikki, who was just what I needed to cheer me up. Nikki loves to fetch, just like a dog. She will fetch her favorite toy mouse for hours if someone will keep throwing it for her!

SCOUT

Scout (brother of Ethel and Lucy) was adopted by one of our great volunteers, Stacey Rogers. This is what she wrote to us about him:
I fostered Scout since he and about 7 other cats were removed from a home where he was living in extremely overcrowded conditions. He spent a month at the vet, recovering from an upper respiratory infection and other ailments. He was affectionate from the beginning. In the first month living with us, he doubled his body weight, recovered from his U.R.I. and regrew all of the hair that had been shaved from his neck (it appeared that a collar had been left on him too long as a kitten).
He is now a very active member of our family and loves all of his four-legged buddies, as you can see from the photos! Sometimes, I wake to find him curled up in my arms.

IVAN AND PERRY

These boys were adopted by Nicole and Darrell Zinn in October 2004. Here's what they have to say about the new additions to their household:
Perry and Ivan joined our household on October 8, 2004. The picture is from their first weekend at home. The boys are best friends and both adjusted quickly to their new surroundings. Perry loves to wake up Nicole every morning with lots of hugs and kisses (and sometimes once or twice in the middle of the night). He is very affectionate and loves to greet anyone who comes to the door. Ivan's favorite toy is his ball. His favorite activity is playing fetch with Darrell. We know he wants to play when he carries his ball and drops it at our feet. We're so happy to have the boys in our lives.
