Who We Are
The Mission of SPCA of Northern Virginia is to end the abuse and
homelessness of cats and dogs.
SPCA NOVA
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Northern Virginia (SPCA NOVA) is a volunteer-based, non-profit, private organization. We were established by local citizens to rescue domestic cats and dogs from cruelty, neglect and abandonment. We rescue hundreds of cats and dogs each year. SPCA NOVA is a “no-kill” organization that does not euthanize healthy, adoptable cats and dogs. We don’t have a traditional shelter. Our cats live in foster homes and our dogs live either in foster homes or a private kennel until adopted.

Rescue and Rehabilitation
We respond to citizen requests for help and investigate reports of animal cruelty or neglect with experienced volunteers and a court-appointed humane investigator. We specialize in:
- Rescuing and rehabilitating cats and dogs that have the greatest need for our help – especially those who are victims of cruelty, neglect or abandonment.
- Taking cats and dogs into our care from local shelters when space is available.
- Providing veterinary care, rehabilitation and professional dog training to animals in our care.
What We Do
Adoption
We seek safe, loving, life-long homes for our cats and dogs. Our services include:
- Hosting adoption fairs for dogs.
- Arranging in-home adoption visits and periodic adoption events for cats.
- Finding the right life-long match between our cats and dogs and their adoptive families.
Spay/Neuter
We address various spay/neuter issues through our Spay,
Inc. program and other initiatives. We focus on:
- Providing discounted spay/neuter referrals to animal hospitals and spay/neuter clinics for anyone who needs assistance – no income or residency requirements!
- Providing low-cost or free spay/neuter assistance to low-income residents.
- Educating government and community officials, pet owners, and others about the benefits of spaying/neutering.
- Partnering with local and regional spay/neuter programs to provide access to affordable spay/ neuter services.
Community Outreach and Education

We educate the public about animal and human welfare issues. Our activities include:
- Providing information through our Website, newsletter, on-line communication, and community and adoption events about animal health and behavior and the positive impact companion animals have on our quality of life.
- Participating in or sponsoring community events such as pet fiestas and dog washes.
- Offering humane education at local schools to teach children how to be safe around animals as well as responsible pet owners.
