Who We Are and What We Do
The Mission of SPCA of Northern Virginia is to end the abuse and homelessness of cats and dogs.
SPCA NOVA
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Northern Virginia (SPCA NOVA) is a volunteer-based, non-profit, private organization established by local citizens to rescue domestic cats and dogs from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. We are a “no-kill” organization. We do not euthanize healthy, adoptable cats and dogs. We rescue as many cats and dogs as we have the capacity to help. We do not have a shelter. Our cats are housed in foster homes, and our dogs live either in foster homes or a private kennel until adopted.
Our Board of Directors and volunteers are responsible for all SPCA activities. We receive funding to support our programs from adoption fees, membership dues, donations, and fundraising events. We strive to expand our rescue operations and offer more services to the community.
Rescue and Rehabilitation
We investigate reports of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment with court-appointed humane investigators.
- We rescue and rehabilitate cats and dogs with the greatest need for our help.
- We respond to requests for help from residents when cats or dogs are lost or abandoned.
- We work with local shelters to take in cats and dogs when we have space available.
- We provide veterinary care, rehabilitation and professional training.
Adoption
We seek safe, loving, life-long homes for cats and dogs in our care.
- We provide cats and dogs with food, shelter, and lots of love!
- We host adoption fairs for dogs and arrange in-home adoption visits with cats.
- We carefully screen applicants to ensure they can provide proper care and work hard to match the needs of the cat or dog with the adoptive family.
Spay/Neuter
We provide low-cost spay/neuter referrals to local vets for cats and dogs in Northern Virginia through our Spay, Inc. program.
- We work with local vets to offer spay/neuter choices at a discounted rate for everyone - no income or residency requirements.
- We educate citizens, government officials, pet owners, and families about the benefits of spay/neuter.
- We are facilitating the opening of a low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Northern Virginia.
Community Outreach and Education
We educate the public about issues such overpopulation, mistreatment and abandonment, health and behavior, and humane treatment of cats and dogs.
- We provide information through our web site, bi-annual newsletters, on-line communication, and adoption events.
- We participate in community events.
- We provide humane education at local schools.
